Random Science Stuff

How many seven-year-olds go to the library and ask the librarian to help him find these?

We have a toad ranch. Current population: 2

The kids have planted "their" gardens. They used survey flags to stake out their territory, and they chose what they wanted. Basically, each of the boys has beans, carrots, potatoes, and gourds. Michael also chose cantalope and marigolds, and Danny chose mini-pumpkins. Rachel's is 100% flowers so she can pick all she wants. Danny learned about companion planting - tomatoes love carrots and onions, but they hate kale and potatoes, etc.

Sam has decided he likes play-doh. Until yesterday, he hated and didn't even want it near him. Now it's his favorite thing. Go figure.

My kids were stunned and amazed by my demonstration of centrifugal force using a full bucket of water. Then Michael tried. His somewhat soggy sister was less than impressed.

  1. This is probably not the best "mom" memory to share with you but nonetheless, it is one of my earliest memories of public school in Saginaw. Our class went outside to demonstrate centrifugal force with a bucket of water, too. I guess some things never change, do they? Anyway, each of us got a chance to do the little experiment. A classmate of mine by the name of Ruthanne Sperry (some things you never forget, and you'll see why), began to swing that bucket with all her might. Around and around it sent until the handle gave out (metal bucket) and the bucket caught her right behind her right ear nearly cutting it right off!

You never in your life saw a teacher run so fast holding a crying child! The rest of us were quickly told to go back to the classroom. In those days, you did as you were told. Soon the vice-principal showed up for the rest of the day. Ruthanne came to class the following day with half of her head bandaged. She did keep her ear!

Now, how's that for a memory?
